  • Aim

    The lectures are aimed to provide basic knowledge on telecommunications technologies employed to support security, logistic and intelligent transportation systems. In more detail, communication and networking fundamentals will be introduced and in particular, the concept of signals and systems, radio-communications mobile systems, satellite communications networking systems, protocols and wireless networks – usually exploited by modern Intelligent Transportation Systems – will be described from the technological viewpoint.

    Syllabus

    The course is divided in two modules (shortly "Systems" and "Network"), and more precisely, the course program is about:

    "Systems" (Prof. F. Lavagetto) - Introduction to signals and systems; impulse response; filtering; power and energy spectrum; sampling theorem; A/D and D/A conversion with PCM systems; analog and digital signal transmission; FDM and TDM multiplexing; introduction to electromagnetic propagation and wireless communication systems; short range communication: UHF and VHF transmissions; long range communication: cellular coverage, handover concept, frequency allocation, radio resources management, GSM and GPRS radio systems, introduction to radio transmission in 3G, LTE and WiMax systems; introduction to satellite communications.

    "Networks" (Prof. I. Bisio) - Structure of telecommunication networks; transmission media; functional structure, definition of protocol, remote system communication; definition of circuit and packet switching; Internet and TCP/IP networks; Internet protocols (top-down approach), TCP,  UDP, IP, ARP, DNS, DHCP and ICMP; introduction to Ethernet and 802.3; short range transport support networks: IEEE 802.11; CSMA/CD and CSMA/CA multiple access; long range transport support networks: WiMax (IEEE 802.16); vertical handover with IEEE 802.21; MANET and VANET.

    Acquired skills

    At the end of the lectures the students will acquire the necessary knowledge to assess, design and to monitor the main elements constituting the telecommunications and systems supporting the transportation systems.
